本作の特長は、今なお明瞭に遺される格調高い複弁蓮華文（ふくべんれんげもん）にあります。規則正しく放射状に広がる優美な蓮華の花弁と外周を囲む珠文（しゅもん）には、当時の造瓦技術の高さと職人の確かな手技が立体的に浮かび上がります。経年による一部の欠けや風化すらも、千年以上の時を刻んできた歴史の証明として、日本独自の控えめな美徳（Understated Elegance）を体現しています。
